BSSH Intructional Courses Overview
The BSSH have been running Instructional Courses in hand surgery for 25 years. Throughout this time the courses have consistently provided world class teaching from an expert faculty, attracting delegates from the UK and Europe, from orthopaedic and plastic surgery backgrounds.
Over a 3-year period a series of 2-day courses running in June and February each year will cover the entire syllabus in hand surgery. Each course will explore a subject area in depth with innovative teaching combining lectures, small group tutorials and simulation.

9.1 Soft tissue reconstruction, burns and infection
Friday 7 and Saturday 8 June 2024
The first course in series 9 will cover soft tissue reconstruction, burns and infection. The course will provide comprehensive learning for trainees and a valuable update for established hand surgery consultants, with the opportunity to discuss cases, concepts and techniques with faculty.

9.2 Fractures and joint injuries
Friday 7 and Saturday 8 February 2025
The second course in series 9 will cover fractures and joint injuries Short concise lecture sessions of the 2 days of the course will cover principles & decision making, metacarpal and phalangeal fracture treatment, PIPJ injuries, and thumb injuries.

9.3 Inflammatory and Degenerative Arthritis
Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June 2025
The third course in series 9 will cover inflammatory and degenerative arthritis. Alongside a programme of short focussed lectures, our expert faculty will run small group tutorials, practical simulation work and facilitated case-based discussions covering all aspects of inflammatory and degenerative arthritis of the hand including joint replacement surgery, fusions and rheumatoid hand surgery.

9.4 Dupuytren’s Children’s Hand Surgery and Tumours
Friday 6 and Saturday 7 February 2026
The fourth course in series 9 will cover Dupuytren’s children’s hand surgery and tumours. Almost all hand surgeons will treat patients with Dupuytren’s in their elective practice and the course will provide delegates with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and treatment of this condition as well as providing an up-date as to where we are with development of future novel treatment avenues.

9.5 The Wrist
Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June 2026
The fifth course in series 9 will cover all aspects of wrist surgery both elective and traumatic. Pre-course material will cover biomechanics and kinematics of wrist movement along with a video guide to clinical examination and radiology of the wrist. Content will include scaphoid injuries, scapholunate ligament injuries, distal radial fractures and perilunate dislocation, DRUJ instability and injuries to the TFCC

9.6 Nerve and Tendon
Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February 2027
The sixth course in series 9 will cover nerve and tendons. The final course in series 9 of the BSSH instructional courses, this course will explore traumatic and elective problems relating to nerve and tendon. Pre-course material will cover basic science of nerve and tendon healing as well as a guide to examination of the brachial plexus including the provocative tests for thoracic outlet syndrome.
