Public and Patient Initiative (PPI)
Job description
The patient and Public initiative of the BSSH is fundamental to the development of the society and all its activities. We are a charity that represents hand surgery care in the UK and patient care and public awareness regarding care of the hand are therefore integral to the society’s many activities.
The PPI applicant should have a keen interest in supporting the development of surgical care of the hand. He/she does not have to be or have been a patient. Demonstration of interest in health care delivery in a hospital setting is essential. They should have the time available to attend the daytime meetings.
The PPI representative agrees to attend two or three times per year half day committee meetings with full reimbursement of travel and subsistence costs through the society secretariat. All expenses to be submitted with invoices/tickets using the society expenses claim form, and adherence to the rules of expense claim submission within 3 months of the expense.
Each PPI representative should represent the public at large to the society. They will be assigned from their committee a ‘PPI Champion’ who will give support to the PPI representative on that committee. This will include explanation of medical jargon before or after the committee meetings. The PPI committee champion will ensure the PPI voice is heard and recorded in minutes, and give any views of chosen public and patients representative to the BSSH PPI lead.
The PPI representative must agree to a telephone conference feedback or written report to the PPI lead. A yearly report (each Sept) of PPI views will be submitted to the President of the society. The term of office is for three years.
