Committee Terms of Reference
Who We Are
The Communications Committee acts as a mouthpiece for our Society to engage directly with members, the public, patients and practitioners about the work of our Society and specialty.
Communications range from advancing patient care through improved access to hand surgery, developing support for and funding of our specialty, to the optimisation of messaging within our Society to increase connectivity, engagement and understanding among members.
Committee Members
Ryan Trickett
Chair, 2022 - 2025
Ryan has been a Consultant Hand Surgeon in Cardiff since 2015, having trained in Wales, Nottingham and Derby. He has previously served on the Research Committee, leading the James Lind Alliance and ICHOM projects for the BSSH. He has a research interest in trauma and patient reported outcome measures.
Michael David
Webmaster, 2020 - 2023
Michael David is an NHS Consultant Hand Surgeon working at University Hospital Coventry since 2019. He has an orthopaedic training background, and is passionate about teaching & technology … he is quite unashamed of the fact that most people think he is a geek! Feel free to him send feedback.
Nicola Fine
Committee Member, 2020 - 2023
Nicola is an orthopaedic surgeon who has completed fellowships in orthoplastic hand surgery in Swansea and Melbourne. Since Autumn 2021 she has worked as a consultant at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
Gemma Batten
Committee Member, 2022 - 2025
Gemma is a junior clinical fellow in plastic surgery working in London with a passion for social media, medical illustration and graphic design. She lends her social media expertise to both the BSSH and the Journal of Hand Surgery European Volume.
Kunal Kulkarni
Committee Member, 2022 - 2025
Kunal was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust in 2022. He completed his training in Oxford, London, and East Midlands, followed by an orthoplastic Hand and Wrist surgery fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. His main interests are healthcare management/leadership, education, and technology.
Julia Ruston
Committee Member, 2022 - 2025
Julia has been a Consultant Hand Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital since 2022. She completed plastic surgery training in London, and the hand TIG fellowship in Manchester. Julia is a qualified medical artist, and has enjoyed illustrating hand surgery for publications including the Journal of Hand Surgery (Eur).
