I was very honoured to have been elected to Council a year ago. My first two meetings had been Virtual meetings, but with restrictions having been eased I went up to Oxford for my first F2F Council Meeting prior to the Autumn meeting.
We were all very happy to see each other in relatively normal circumstances, something that seemed to be the norm over the next two days. Seeing and greeting friends and colleagues, some of which one hasn’t seen for some time is so much better than the virtual world. I do hope this continues.
The night before Council I had gone through the 175 pages of the agenda. Agenda items ranged from a review of the previous minutes, to the President’s report, review of the finances, listening to the reports from all the Committee Chairs, to the discussion on future meetings with so much more in between.
A huge amount is discussed during the 6 hours of a Council meeting but 2 things become very obvious very quickly to any new member.
Firstly, everyone on Council can have their say and the President will make sure that everyone including new and old members are asked for their opinions.
Secondly, the overwhelming feeling is about doing the right thing for the Society and its members and making sure that the patient and outcomes are very much to the fore.
It is also very inclusive with everyone tasked with getting involved with the various roles and jobs that are required by being a member of Council.
I have to commend our President, Sue Fullilove on getting through the agenda and remarkably only over-running by ten minutes. We all deserved a drink at the end.
I am looking forward to my remaining two years on Council. I am also glad I put my name forward, and I would encourage all members to get involved in the Society whether that is on one of the many Committees or Council itself.
Everyone can get involved whether you are in a local DGH on the South Coast such as myself or in a Teaching Hospital.
See you all in Exeter.
