As a group of hand surgeons we cover a broad spectrum of practice with specific individual interests including trauma, microsurgery, adult brachial plexus, obstetric brachial plexus palsy, rheumatoid, wrist, arthroscopy, joint replacement arthroplasty, and children’s hand disorders, in addition to the wider spectrum of hand surgery. The successful appointee can expect good operative experience to complement his / her existing logbook – this placement is competitive in respect of new skills acquisition and generates a broad operative experience.
The BSSH Instructional Courses in Hand Surgery are based in Manchester. Mr Muir is recent current chairman of the committee and Mr Naqui led development of the practical Masterclasses which run alongside the Instructional Courses. In addition there are unique opportunities for original research given our links with the university. Most fellows leave the department with at least one publication.
We encourage our fellows to participate in The Postgraduate Diploma in Hand Surgery of the BSSH/University of Manchester in this placement. Professor Lees was the instigator of the Diploma and Mr Muir and Mr Naqui have been examiners. There is a strong track record of success on this programme. In addition Mr Muir is currently responsible for running the FESSH exam (EBHS or European diploma) and Mr Naqui is an examiner. We also host the MSc in Hand Surgery for those who wish to build on their clinical attainment of the Diploma with an academic component for their professional development (usually done as a young consultant).
There is close co-operation between the plastic and the orthopaedic surgeons. We have regular teaching fir the hand fellow and journal clubs also open to other trainees. We have a Complex Hand MDT bimonthly to which all the consultants and hand fellow are invited. We would be delighted to provide any further information that prospective applicants may require prior to making their selection. Please get in touch via 0161 291 6648.
