Rotation Format |
The working week is split between elective and trauma Hand Surgery supervised by both Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery Hand Consultants. The post is supernumerary and the timetable can be tailored to the training needs of the individual. This is the regional centre for hand trauma, both soft tissue and bony, and the fellow is expected to feel comfortable managing tendon injuries and reconstruction, peripheral nerve injuries, and hand fractures by the end of the rotation. There are general and specialised elective hand clinics, with specialist clinics including congenital hands, wrist, nerve and complex MDT clinics. The fellow’s time would be split similarly between theatre and clinics, see Typical weekly timetable below.

Additional Notes |
The Edinburgh Hand Unit at St John’s benefits from both Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery Hand Consultants, forming a fully integrated Hand Unit. The fellow will gain experience in the broad spectrum of Hand Surgery, including trauma, Dupuytren’s, peripheral nerve Injury, soft tissue reconstruction (hand & upper limb), microsurgery, rheumatoid, wrist, arthroscopy, joint arthroplasty, and congenital hand disorders (led by Mr Wee Lam at the RHCYP). The Unit is the regional centre for hand trauma. The Unit is involved in national clinical trials, including in Dupuytren’s, and has strong research links with the University of Edinburgh, including the Roslin Research Group, the Anatomy Department and the Paxton Tissue Engineering Lab.
