Silastic Tendon Rod Membership Update
17 December 2024 (Last updated: 17 Dec 2024 14:20)
The BSSH has been aware of increasing reports from its members concerning difficulties in sourcing silicon tendon rods used for complex primary or secondary tendon reconstruction. Whilst not part of every hand surgeon’s repertoire, these rods can be invaluable. Historically there had been multiple suppliers of silicon rods, but in recent years, this had seemingly diminished to a single supplier used across the UK. Furthermore, the BSSH were aware of some surgeons resorting to off-licence use of alternative products to facilitate neo tendon sheath formation.
The BSSH distributed a short questionnaire to determine whether there was a national supply problem and whether a viable alternative had been identified. It demonstrated that 70% of respondents were experiencing supply issues with tendon rods, with no viable alternatives described.
We have recently received news that Lavender Medical – a UK distributor – has obtained a supply of silastic tendon rods. There is immediate availability of 5mm and 6mm rods, with 3mm and 4mm rods available in early 2025. These rods are fully registered for use in the UK.
Whilst the BSSH is unable to recommend one supplier over another, this is the only licensed supplier of silastic tendon rods that we have been made aware of from our national enquiries. In the current climate of diminishing stock levels and off-license use of alternatives, it is important that our members know there is a licensed alternative available.
