14–15 November 2024
The BSSH Autumn Scientific Meeting, held on 14–15 November at the ICC Belfast, brought together leading experts in hand and upper limb surgery. This dynamic two-day event, chaired by BSSH President Ms Grainne Bourke, featured a rich programme of cutting-edge research, engaging lectures, and valuable networking opportunities. The meeting also welcomed the German Society for Surgery of the Hand as its guest society, further fostering international collaboration.
Highlights from the Meeting
The conference kicked off with a fascinating Global Partnership Symposium, where the progress and challenges of international projects, including the LION Hand Unit in Malawi, were presented. Jonathan Jones provided an inspiring update on the LION project, which continues to deliver transformative surgical education and life-changing care in Malawi. A recorded perspective from Dr G Ngondo, a LION Fellow, offered an on-the-ground view of the programme’s impact.
The scientific sessions featured an array of topics, from advances in nerve imaging and outcomes for hand fractures to innovative surgical techniques. Notably, the BSSH Pioneer Lecture, delivered by Prof Marybeth Ezaki, honoured Mr David Evans and explored the convergence of heritage and innovation in hand surgery.
Attendees had the opportunity to participate in free paper sessions, where emerging research was showcased, and symposia covering themes such as congenital challenges, research priorities, and fracture treatment algorithms. The German Society for Surgery of the Hand contributed invaluable insights into managing small joint arthritis and technical problem-solving in surgical practice.
