BOA Future Leaders Programme 2022 - BSSH candidates
29 November 2021 (Last updated: 17 Dec 2021 12:02)
The BSSH have sponsored three individuals to take part in the 2022 BOA Future Leaders' Programme. Initially, two spaces were available, however due to the high quality of applications received this year, Council took the decision to sponsor three candidates to participate in the programme. Those three candidates have very kindly shared their thoughts on the programme and their responses to the sponsorship opportunity below:
“I am absolutely delighted to be accepted onto the BOA Future Leaders Program and extremely grateful to BSSH for sponsoring me. Starting as a new consultant in a large inner-city hospital that does not have a formal hand service means this programme could not have come at a better time. I was encouraged by senior colleagues at Derby and elsewhere to apply and interview for this opportunity, I feel very privileged in being awarded a place. I hope to use the skills and mentorship I gain from this programme to establish an efficient and user-friendly service for patients presenting with hand and wrist pathologies. I hope that the programme will help me lead a cultural change within my trust and develop positive leadership skills that I can continue to use throughout my career.”

“Having been in post as a hand and wrist consultant at Leeds hand unit for eighteen months, I was fortunate enough to be awarded a BSSH supported place on the BOA Future Leaders programme. I see the programme as a structured platform upon which to build advanced leadership and management skills. Already, I have been in a number of situations where these non-technical aspects of our roles have taken on huge importance, and I hope the programme will aid me in setting up services, both locally and regionally, that will improve the spectrum and quality of care for many hand and wrist patients.”
Chrishan Mariathas
“As a member of the BOA, I’ve always been aware of the Future Leaders Programme and its potential and value in preparing me for a leadership role within the NHS. As soon as I became a consultant in October 2020, one of my aims was to help develop a combined Orthopaedic and Plastics Hand & Wrist Surgery service in Essex and I saw the Future Leaders Programme as an invaluable tool in helping me achieve that. I have kept an eye out for it and applied as soon as the applications were open. The faculty and the course Programme is excellent and I’m looking forward to this opportunity. I’m extremely grateful and proud to have been awarded a BSSH funded position this year to help me gain the tools and support in laying the foundations for my aspirations.”
