The BSSH overseas committee were first invited to Malawi in 2015 by the AO Allicance Foundation with WOC. A one-day hand trauma course was then held as part of the Malawian Orthopaedic Association Meeting in 2015, which was then repeated in 2017. Following this, the BSSH Malawi project led by myself, delivered a two-day hand surgery workshop in 2018 for COSECSA surgical trainees in Blantyre, Malawi. The BSSH has now established a formal link with COSECSA and will be holding an official two-day COSECSA hand surgery course in Blantyre in September 2019. The faculty (comprised of BSSH and BAHT) will also be teaching the orthopaedic clinical officers again in Mangochi during the same visit and running two separate hand therapy courses.
