International Women's Day 2022
Break the Bias
08 March 2022 (Last updated: 8 Mar 2022 12:14)
The theme for International Women's Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias, encouraging those in all walks of life to actively call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping. We spoke to Denise Osei-Kuffour from the Overseas Trainee Committee to find out her thoughts on tackling the bias in hand surgery within the UK, as well as when working overseas in limited-resource settings.
To break the bias in hand surgery / working with LMIC partners:
- What I could do personally
"Have the confidence to speak up, cultivate an environment conducive to and empower others to feel comfortable enough to speak up and to share my experiences and insight with others so that we can inspire each other."
- What others could do to help
"Encourage and celebrate diversity in our teams so people feel inclusive and welcome."
- How the bias was broken for me
"Encountering female leaders in global surgery and knowing there were those who have gone before me and have achieved great things despite challenges they may have faced."
Will you help break the bias?
Cross your arms to show solidarity.
We encourage all BSSH members to strike the IWD 2022 pose and share your #BreakTheBias image, video, resources, presentation or articles on social media using #IWD2022 #BreakTheBias to encourage further people to commit to helping forge an inclusive world. Thank you.
